Description

Vintage Persian Zanjan Rug

Origin: Zanjan City, Zanjan Province, Iran. Zanjan is the market town for many weaving villages of the area.

Age: 1970's, 45-55 years old.

Design: Large central medallion

Colors: Red, indigo, light and dark blue, orange, brown, gold, green.

Foundation: Cotton warp and single cotton weft.

Pile: Wool, dense uniform low pile with a low sheen.

Size: 4 feet x 7 feet

Knotting: Symmetrical

Condition: Very good condition with uniform full pile, one small area of reweaving (about palm sized) which has slightly altered the design and shade of colors within the repair.

The large medallion design and colors of this rug are very striking. The design is referred to as "Samaveri," which I believe to be in reference to the medallion having the appearance of a mirrored samovar. The design has many lovely symbols including large boteh, tree of life, rosettes, and to me what looks like a border of beehives. It's one of my favorite designs! A very classic village style Persian rug, perfect for a living room, bedroom or office.
