Description

Origin: Baluch rug from around the border of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan.

Age: 1980s, ~40 years old.

Design: Repeated geometric medallion design. Sometimes referred to as “animal pelt” design. The interior of the medallion contains a sun-cross or sunburst, a cosmic symbol. There are many “tree of life” designs scattered throughout the field. The borders are protective symbols of interlocking serpents.

Colors: Modern dyes. Many shades of red, green, orange, indigo, natural ivory, black and more.

Foundation: Wool warp and double wool weft, which gives the rug a very floppy handle. The sides are three cords of wool overcast with goat hair.

Pile: Finely knotted for a Baluch rug, with a very dense wool pile clipped short to reveal detail of the design. Flatwoven/soumak end bands.

Size: 4 feet by 6 feet.

Knotting: Asymmetrical

Condition: Excellent original condition with almost no signs of use. Signs of minor dye migration from an earlier wash. The rug should not be saturated with water. It was freshly cleaned by extensive dust removal and wiping of the pile to avoid any color bleed. Future immersion washing if needed requires a professional with experience in preventing dye migration and proper equipment.
