Semi-Antique Persian Senneh Rug



Origin: City of Senneh (modern-day Sanandaj), Kurdistan Province, Northwest Iran.

Age: 1940-50, 75-85 years old.

Design: Allover floral design called "gol farang," foreign flower. Inspired by French floral designs.

Colors: Red, pink, indigo, light and dark blue, teal, green, yellow, brown, white. Appears to be all natural vegetal dyes with excellent use of abrash (variations of color from different dye lots).

Foundation: Cotton warp and single cotton weft.

Pile: Thick pile with very high quality lanolin-rich wool.

Size: 3 feet 5 inches x 4 feet 5 inches.

Knotting: Symmetrical, very finely and tightly knotted, high knot count around 160+ knots per square inch.

Condition: Excellent original condition with full pile and no wear. The bottom end of the rug seems to be missing a few rows of knots but has been professionally secured.

A masterpiece of Kurdish weaving from the city of Senneh. Durable enough for the floor, though in my opinion it is more suited for the wall. The design of the field, "gol farang," meaning foreign flower, is inspired by French floral designs. As good on the wall as a Monet. The outer borders are common Kurdish designs of repeating boteh, a symbol of life and fertility, and geometric shapes, symbols of protection.
