Semi-Antique Persian Bakhtiari Rug

Origin: Village rug of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, Iran.

Age: 1960-70s, 55-65 years old

Design: One of the most iconic Bakhtiari designs, inspired by Persian walled gardens. The design is called "khesti," meaning bricks or tiles in Farsi, and refers to the checkered pattern. It is often referred to as garden or panel design in English. The square panels are filled with plant, floral, and bird designs, mirroring the symmetrical and compartmentalized layout one would find in a walled garden in Iran. Willow trees, tree of life, many birds, flowering vases, clusters of grapes and other abstract floral motifs fill each square. The main border features many abstract flowers. Likely woven in the home without use of a cartoon (graph paper) due to the many variations in the design.

Colors: Many shades of red, pink, yellow, green, indigo, light and dark blue, teal, orange, ivory, brown, gray, black.

Foundation: Cotton warp and single cotton weft.

Pile: Uniform very thick wool pile that is very shiny and glossy.

Size: 5 feet 2 inches by 9 feet 5 inches.

Knotting: Symmetrical

Condition: Very good condition with minimal signs of wear, freshly washed.
